Spooky Month Subclasses for D&D 5e Pt 1: The Curseblood Sorcerer (w/ Vitalist Sorcerer Variant Class)

I decided that each week of October I’d release a few subclasses (2-3) tied to a different theme: Sweet, Spooky, Figuratively Cursed, and Literally Cursed. This week we have literally cursed. I will be posting one subclass of each week to my Patreon as a Patron Exclusive, but the rest I will post here for free. For our free literally cursed subclass this week I bring you the Curseblood Sorcerer. But that’s not all. As a little treat thrown in I will be adding my rules for a Variant Sorcerer called the Vitalist Sorcerer. Enjoy!

Curseblood Sorcerer

Curseblood Sorcerers are cursed individuals able to draw power from the magical affliction in their blood.

Use the table below to choose or randomly determine an origin for your curse (alternatively work with your DM to design your own).

Curse Origin
d6Origin
1You or an ancestor drew the ire of a powerful entity such as a Hag, Devil, or Deity
2You or an ancestor attempted and failed Lichdom
3You or an ancestor was blessed as a devoted worshiper of a deity of transformation, curses, dark magic, or misfortune (such as Beshaba, Hecate, or Loki)
4You or an ancestor found a cursed relic that when attuned bound itself to their entire bloodline
5You or an ancestor contracted a magic disease
6The universe freaking hates you.

Curseblood Spells:

You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Curseblood Spells table. Each spell counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know. These spells can’t be replaced when you gain a level in this class.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be an Enchantment or a Necromancy spell from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list.

Curseblood Spells
Sorcerer LevelSpells
1stCause Fear, Hex
3rdBlindness/Deafness, Crown of Madness
5thBestow Curse, Vampiric Touch
7thBlight, Stoneskin
9thAntilife Shell, Insect Plague

In addition, consult the Cursed Manifestations table and choose or randomly determine a way your connection to curses manifests while you are casting any of your sorcerer spells.

Cursed Manifestations
d6Manifestation
1Your eyes turn to a solid black that seems to suck up the light around them making the face seem pale and shadowy.
2Your veins bulge and pulse with green, red, or black energy
3Profane runes seem to etch themselves into your skin and smoke, blood, or pus oozes out.
4Blood seeps from your eyes, nose, and ears
5The cacophonous cawing of crows can be heard by you and those affected by your magic
6Shadows swirl around your feet

Bad Blood:

The cursed blood that flows through your body has made you resilient. At 1st level, your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 again whenever you gain a level in this class.

Furthermore you can give yourself disadvantage on an attack to deal an additional 1d6 + Proficiency Bonus Necrotic Damage on a hit. This damage increases by 1d6 at 5th, 10th, and 15th level.

Cursed Existence:

Starting at 6th level your connection to curses allows you to manipulate misfortune. Whenever a creature performs an action or reaction that requires you to roll a Saving Throw and you roll 10 below the DC or 1 if the DC was 10 or lower, you can cause the creature who triggered the Saving Throw to roll all Saving Throws until the end of their next turn with Disadvantage.

Baleful Stride:

Starting at 14th level whenever you trigger an Opportunity Attack and the target hits you they take 1d8 Necrotic Damage and you gain advantage on your next attack against them. If they miss you they take 1d4 necrotic damage and gain disadvantage on attacks against you until the end of your next turn.

Twisted Soul:

At 18th level whenever you take Necrotic, Poison, or Psychic Damage you can require whoever dealt it to make a Constitution save equal to your Spell Save DC. On a success they take half of the damage dealt as the same type, ignoring resistance and treating immunity as resistance. If they fail the save they suffer the same effect but become vulnerable to that damage until the end of their next turn.

Design Notes: I wanted this subclass to take advantage of normally negative situations. It turns potentially bad scenarios and uses them to devastate their enemies. They may draw power from curses, but they are still cursed afterall.

Vitalist Sorcerer (Variant Sorcerer Class Option)

A Vitalist Sorcerer draws their magic and power more specifically on the magic in their blood rather than their influence on the universe.

A Vitalist Sorcerer uses Constitution as their Spellcasting Ability instead of Charisma.

Furthermore a Vitalist Sorcerer may choose Medicine as a Skill granted by their class.

Finally a Vitalist Sorcerer may only use Sorcery Points for Metamagic. They cannot turn Sorcery Points into Spell Slots or vice versa. Instead they may turn Hit Die into Spell Slots or Sorcery Points. The Vitalist Sorcerer can expend Hit Die to regain a spell slot of a spell level equal to the number of Hit Die expended with a max spell level of 5th. Alternatively, a Vitalist Sorcerer can expend a single hit die to regain 2 Sorcery Points. If a Vitalist Sorcerer has expended all Hit Die they may still regain spell slots at the cost of health. A Vitalist Sorcerer gaining spell slots this way takes 6 damage per level of the spell slot restored with a max level of 3rd. All Hit Die are restored after a long rest.

I included the Vitalist Sorcerer in this post because I figured it would be fun to pair with the Curseblood. Focus on your own blood/health or just become a gish.
